Accidental Marathoner

It was a normal Saturday morning for April Hamlin of Elkmont, Alabama. She let her two year old hound dog, Ludivine out in the back yard to "do her business". It was only a couple hours later that she started getting an idea of how eventful Ludivine's morning had been.

About the same time Ludivine was let out, the Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon was getting ready to start, about a quarter mile from Hamlin's home. Ludivine made her escape from the yard and was drawn to all the activity at the starting line. Several runners reported seeing her there, greeting runners, getting pats on the head, excited to be among the crowd. Once the race started, Ludivine went along.

Tim Horvath ran most of the race with Ludivine. A couple times he thought she'd tired out and quit but he later realized that she was just stopping when she came across something "interesting"; once, a dead rabbit, many times, other dogs and animals along the way. But she just kept coming back, ears flopping and tongue flapping.

Horvath finished the 13.1 mile race in sixth place, in just over 1 hour and 32 minutes. Ludivine was right behind him and was awarded seventh and they put a medal around her neck.

Elkmont is a small town and Hamlin, Ludivine's owner, works at the high school. Students and friends volunteering at the race recognized Ludivine and took pictures to send to Hamlin. She was quite surprised when she realized what had happened. “I can’t believe she ran the whole half marathon because she’s actually really lazy,” said Hamlin. Lucky Kitten

Last month, Tony Miranda was at his job in Galt, California in a Cal-Waste recycling center. His position that morning was along a fast moving conveyor belt dropping its contents into a shredding machine. He couldn't believe his eyes when he spotted the tiny kitten moving among the recycled waste speeding towards him.

He scooped her up and reported it on the radio. Needless to say, the unusual news got everyone's attention. He checked her out and seemed fine but obviously had used up several of her nine lives to have made it this far. To get to that conveyor meant that she had likely been in a dumpster, dropped into a dump truck, dumped at the center, shoved by a dozer onto one conveyor belt and then another before finally dropping several feet onto the belt where Miranda rescued her.

Listening to the report on the radio was Shift Lead Heather Garcia. She immediately went to see Miranda and the live "cat" that had been found. She was shocked that it was such a tiny kitten. After holding and playing with Murphy, named after the MRF (material recovery facility), she decided that she had to adopt her. After such a harrowing start, we wish little Murphy a much quieter, easier life from now on.

See news video of the story and pictures of the recycling plant where she was found on the KCRA News website.
